Do this before you move on to November…

Hi Reader,

Tomorrow we turn the page to a new month. I love that feeling of fresh and new, with anticipation of what God will do!

But before we fall prey to the exhilaration of the next thing—plans, projects, or the sugar rush of tonight’s festivities—can I invite you to make a plan to pause this weekend?

Yesterday I was facilitating some reflection time in my Dream Believers community—we do this intentionally at the end of every month for two reasons:

  1. We are forgetful people, likely to move on to the next thing before we acknowledge where we’ve been.
  2. Remembering to celebrate and calling out God’s faithfulness strengthens our trust and hope in Him.

Because sometimes, when you’re in the messy middle of the dream—wondering when things will finally come together—you forget how faithful He’s already been.

During the call, we read from Nehemiah 9:19–21 (NIV):

“Because of your great compassion you did not abandon [your people] in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take. You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.”

For 40 years, "...their clothes did not wear out..." That's the part that gets me.

God’s people didn’t always see where they were going, but His presence and His provision were constants.

The same is true for you.

However, remembering that is the key.

So this weekend, I want to challenge you to devote a quiet hour to reflection and remembering.

Light a candle, pour a cup of something warm, and grab your journal. Here are three questions to guide your time:

  1. What did I feel uncertain about at the start of October?
What have I seen God do since then, big or small? Where do I sense His movement (even if the answer isn’t clear yet)?
  2. What can I celebrate from this month?
Flip through your planner or scroll your camera roll. Notice little moments: a conversation that mattered, courage to try something new, maybe even a new friend.
  3. What is one way I have experienced God’s faithfulness this month?
Be specific. Describe the circumstances and how you knew He was near.

Then whisper a prayer of gratitude.

Because remembrance is how we grow our trust for the road ahead and deepen our connection to Him.

A new plan or goal for a new month is fine (and fun), but here’s what your fickle heart really needs:

To make a practice of remembering the One who’s been guiding you all along.

Will you join me in an intentional reflection practice as we finish out this month?

With you,
~Merritt
