Reader, have you ever whispered these words to yourself?

“Who am I to do this?”

Last week I told you about the planning meeting where one woman quietly asked this question.

And the pens stopped moving.
The planners stayed open.
Because she wasn’t the only one thinking it.

It’s a real question.
With real implications.

“Do I have what it takes to do this?”

Which is often followed by:

“What will people think if I do this?”

I don’t believe women ask these questions because they aren’t capable.

I think they ask them because they’re finally standing close enough to the precipice of the dream for it to matter.

When Brandy, my client, shared her insecurities that day, there wasn’t a single person in the room who would have guessed she felt that way.

We all saw her as an extroverted, vivacious woman with deep devotion to Jesus and a creative idea to bring gospel hope to her local community through in-person events.

A lot of the details were still up in the air.
But details weren’t going to make or break the dream. Anyone could send out invitations. Line up speakers. Assemble charcuterie plates and put ice on the beverages.

What mattered was what she believed about herself.

That’s what I’ve come to believe about our dreams.

The hardest part isn’t the podcast.
Or the manuscript.
Or the ministry.
Or the event.
Or figuring out the latest technology.

It’s the heart of the dreamer that matters most.

Because God-shaped dreams aren’t born in a brainstorming session.

They are born through suffering.
Through disappointment.
Through perseverance.
Through years of following Jesus.
Through discovering His faithfulness even when life didn’t go the way you hoped.

Which is exactly why the question,

“Who am I to do this?”

cuts so deep.

The hardest part of having a dream is becoming the kind of woman who trusts God enough about who He says she is to keep saying yes, even in the unknown.

It’s why dreams like these feel so vulnerable.

They aren’t just projects.

They are deeply connected to the story God has been writing in your life.

And they have God’s redemptive hope written all over them.

But this desire to be of use and to bring glory to God can be a tripwire for believing that you’re not up for the challenge.

In Exodus 3, the angel of the Lord commands Moses from the burning bush to go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt.

God says to Moses, “I have seen… I have heard… I have come… I am sending you…”

And what does Moses say?

“Who am I, that I should go…?”

God’s answer wasn’t, “Here’s why you’re qualified.”

It was, “I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12, NIV)

So, every calling becomes an invitation to know God more deeply.

And that’s what I think we’re really asking when we come to the dream wondering, “Who am I, God? Who did you make me? Who are you, currently, making me?”

​This is why I love gathering with women inside Dream Believers so much.

Our conversations might begin with a strategy or tactic.
But eventually someone says what’s really standing in the way: “I don’t think I’m enough.”

And that’s where progress begins.

You don’t have to arrive at the conversation with confidence.

You just have to be willing to tell the truth.

And allow God to reshape what you believe about yourself as He draws you closer to Christ.
